Timber is used across a range of industries, and for a whole host of different purposes. From the floors, tables or cabinets in your home, to large piers and the frameworks of tall buildings, it is everywhere! As a renewable, sustainable material, it is fantastic that it is used so abundantly. But there are some lesser-known applications for timber which we think should be talked about more (although that may be because we’re certified timber enthusiasts!). One such use is in sea defence, where timber is playing an integral role.
Timber Piles Are Used For Sea Defence
A timber pile is an entire tree trunk, sawn square for practical uses. The breadth of one pile is usually between 12-16 inches, and they are often used as foundations for structures that are not too heavy. They have also been brought in as the frontline of sea defence – often in structures called groynes – to protect our land from the erosion caused by the tides, which are growing stronger thanks to climate change.
What is a timber groyne?
Timber piles (usually 300x300mm) are inserted deep into the sand at beaches across the UK at regular intervals, then linked together by timber planks (often 75x225mm) thus creating solid walls that stretch into the sea. These sturdy structures called groynes act as key defences, helping to cut down the longshore drift, and trap sediments (sand or pebbles) to prevent the loss of materials from the shoreline. This all reduces coastal erosion, helping to keep the British coastline safe, secure and beautiful for many years to come.
Why is Timber the Ideal Choice For Piles?
Certain species of timber, such as Greenheart and Ekki, are naturally resilient to rot and attack by marine organisms. Also, they don’t rust and decay like steel or reinforced concrete which makes such timber a very safe and durable choice for civil and marine engineers. This type pf wood can also absorb high levels of impact and abrasion, and is very simple to install. Timber is also much more affordable than steel, making it a great option for sea defence projects.
One of the reasons we love timber at EcoChoice is because it is sustainable. When sourced from the FSC independently certified forests which are managed responsibly, timber is a renewable, biodegradable material which doesn’t cost the Earth even after its many decades of service protecting the coast lines.
Where Else is Timber Used in the Marine Environment?
Aside from timber piles being used as groynes, you can find them being used for many marine applications. They are used to build docks and marinas, protect harbours from impact (fenders) and even to provide support for piers. As a naturally durable material, it’s a fantastic choice for a range of marine applications. The first boats were made of wood, after all!
