Black Cladding
Black timber cladding gives a building a clean, contemporary face without the cost or carbon of plastic, composite or metal. Our black timber cladding is thermally modified softwood, factory-finished in a deep matt black, supplied in two grades: a standard thermowood redwood and a premium thermowood radiata. Both are responsibly sourced and FSC-certified or PEFC-certified.
Thermal modification is a heat-and-steam process that uses no chemicals. It drives moisture and resin out of the timber, making the boards far more dimensionally stable and resistant to movement, decay, and fungal attack than untreated wood. That stability is what lets a factory-applied black finish stay even and last, rather than cracking and flaking as paint on ordinary timber does.
Why black timber cladding
Demand for black exterior cladding has grown sharply, and most of what is sold under that banner is uPVC, composite or coated aluminium. Timber is the alternative for anyone who wants the look in a natural, lower-carbon material. As blackened or black-stained timber, it suits modern extensions, garden rooms, barn conversions and full house elevations, in both vertical and horizontal layouts.

Premium: Black Thermowood Radiata
Radiata pine (Pinus radiata) is a tighter-grained, more uniform timber than standard redwood, which gives a cleaner finished face and takes the black coating particularly well.

Installation
Fixing method: face fix / secret fix – please consult TDCA for more advice on fixing.
Coverage and ordering: 144mm widths have a face cover of 125mm, so require 8 boards/m2. Always add 6-8% extra for site/grade wastage.
