Let's go!

Marine timber fenders work hard. Day in, day out, they absorb impacts from boats and vessels while coping with constant moisture, drying cycles, tidal movement, saltwater exposure and biological decay. That’s why choosing the right timber for marine fendering is so important to harbours, ports, piers and marinas.

In UK waters, conditions can vary significantly from sheltered rivers and canals to exposed coastal berths. Both hardwood and softwood timber fenders are used, depending on loading requirements, lifespan expectations and budget.

Greenheart

Greenheart has a long history of use in high-durability marine projects. This leading hardwood is popularly used to construct piers and seawalls, and has been for centuries. High-density, impact resistant and robust, Greenheart absorbs collisions with ease to provide resilient protection for both docks and boats. Its inherent oils and unique cellular structure also make it naturally resistant to marine borers, fungi and decay.

Douglas Fir

Douglas Fir is a softwood commonly used in the construction of frames, joists and load-bearing beams because of its strength and reliability. Its good impact resistance also means it performs well in marine environments. Following pressure treatment, Douglas Fir timber can be used as floating fenders or waler systems where durability is less important than cost.

Ekki

Our premium Ekki fenders are the pride of Oxen Cove in Devon and many other settings. The extremely dense, hard, durable and shock-resistant nature of Ekki makes it a reliable choice. The species maintains its integrity despite repeated wetting cycles.

Key features of Ekki include:

  • Extreme density, hardness, and shock resistance.
  • Superior durability for the harshest conditions.
  • Maintains integrity despite repeated wetting cycles.
  • Can withstand high impact and heavy loads without the risk of splitting or splintering.

Larch

Larch is a dense softwood, offering significantly greater strength than common softwoods like Pine and Spruce. At EcoChoice, we have supplied Larch for various applications, including the construction of:

  • Decking
  • Cladding
  • Fencing
  • Gates
  • Exterior furniture

When used in marine settings, Larch is only suitable for medium-duty fendering above the waterline, and only after the necessary treatment. Please note, we supply FSC and PEFC-certified British and European Larch. We do not source and supply Siberian Larch, which is classed as conflict timber since the Russia-Ukraine war.

Opepe

Popular across UK construction projects, Opepe is a sturdy hardwood species which we source from sustainable forests in West Africa. Its durability and stability make it suitable for marine constructions as well as class 3 projects such as decking street furniture and cladding. Piles, walers, rubbing strips, lock gates and fenders made from Opepe are particularly smooth yet also resistant to decay and waterlogging.

Oak

Suitable for lighter-duty marine environments, oak fenders perform best above the waterline. Its tannin content offers a natural durability against fungal decay, moisture cycling and weathering in freshwater or brackish water, although it can stain concrete surfaces, so be careful. With this in mind, it can be a practical choice for quays, jetties, lock gates and river or canal fenders, but only with moderate loads and impacts from small-to-medium sized vessels.

However, it is crucial to note that Oak is less resistant to marine borers (such as shipworm and gribble) in saltwater environments compared to tropical hardwoods like Ekki and Greenheart. It is also susceptible to wear in busy commercial berths, making the denser tropical species superior for heavy-duty, high-traffic settings.
