The many, many uses of larch wood

Larch is a softwood which packs a punch. With moderate durability and wide availability in Europe, it is a common go-to for DIY projects and construction. It is tough, dense and can withstand a fair amount of wear and tear without showing it. As an added bonus, Larch’s creamy-golden hue is warm and vibrant, bringing an instant lift to any timber project.

But to what purpose can it actually be put? Whether you are looking to put your boards to good use or are interested in the potential of this tough softwood, we have taken a look at the most common applications of Larch to learn more.

(A quick note: Siberian Larch is not currently available because of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. This guide refers only to British and European Larch.)

Larch Cladding

Larch is an excellent choice for exterior cladding thanks to its natural durability and strength. Its dense grain and high resin content provide impressive resistance to rot, insects and harsh weather, making it ideal for exposed applications. Over time, the timber will develop a striking silver-grey patina, lending a more rustic look to your building. If you prefer the bright, contemporary aesthetic of new Larch boards, make sure to protect your cladding with a UV-resistant coating or stain the timber annually to refresh the colour.

Larch Decking

Thanks to its durability and strength, Larch is commonly used in decking. Typically, this is a good option for DIY decking projects as the timber is easier to work with than more durable species, such as Ekki and Opepe (we would recommend these for professionally-installed decking only). It still brings a good level of durability to your outdoor space, which can be enhanced with treatments in areas where it touches the ground. With proper care, Larch decking can last for decades.

Fencing and Gates

Naturally resistant to moisture and pests, Larch performs well in outdoor environments, including when used to build fences and gates. Its strength means it holds up against impacts and heavy use, while its attractive grain pattern and warm colour create beautiful boundaries with a lot of charm. As it is not the most durable timber, we do recommend treating any Larch which comes into contact with the ground for added longevity.

When it comes to exterior furniture, Larch offers a balance of beauty, comfort and durability. Its tough strength makes it a good contender for everything from picnic benches to swings, while the warm tones ensure your outdoor space looks inviting and bright.
