Greensted Church in Essex still contains timber planks installed around the year 1060. Nearly a thousand years of British weather, and they are still doing their job. Meanwhile, a fence post built with the wrong timber can rot through in five. The difference comes down to matching the timber, and its treatment, to the conditions it will actually face, and there is a system for doing exactly that.

Why Classification Matters (In Both Directions)

Choosing timber without understanding its classification tends to go wrong in one of two ways. If you used timber that has been treated for Use Class 1 (internal, dry) for a fence post, then you run the risk of the wood rotting and the fence collapsing. You might think you are saving money but the cost of rebuilding means it’s a false economy. It works the other way around too: buy UC5 timber for a UC1 job and you are spending more than you need to, eating into your budget or profits.

The system has two halves. Durability classes describe what a timber species can naturally withstand, and use classes describe what a location will throw at it. Specification is matching one to the other.

Durability Classes: What the Timber Can Handle

Every species has a natural resistance to decay, set out in EN 350 on a five-point scale, where class 1 is very durable and class 5 is not durable.

  • Class 1 (very durable): Ekki, Ipe and Cumaru. These can exceed 25 years outdoors without regular treatment.
  • Class 2 (durable): Oak and Yellow Balau, excellent for decking, cladding and structural outdoor work.
  • Class 3 (moderately durable): usable outdoors, but more dependent on good installation and maintenance.
  • Classes 4 and 5: most commercial softwoods, including Pine and Spruce. Good timbers that need treatment before facing the outdoors.

Nature has quirks worth knowing. Some hardwoods are not very durable, e.g. Ash and Frake, both of which need to be treated in order to handle wear and tear. Some softwoods are naturally durable, including Cedar, Larch and Douglas Fir. The labels describe the tree, not the toughness, so check the class rather than assuming.

Durability class tells you what the timber can survive. Use class tells you what the location will demand.

Use Classes: What the Location Demands (BS EN 335)

  • UC 1: Above ground, covered. Permanently dry. Internal, with no risk of wetting (eg. upper floor joists).
  • UC 2: Above ground, covered by a roof. Internal, occasional risk of wetting (eg. tile battens).
  • UC 3 coated (3.1): Coated, above ground, exposed to frequent wetting (eg. painted cladding above damp proof course).
  • UC 3 uncoated (3.2): Outdoors, uncoated, above ground, exposed to frequent wetting (eg. cladding, fence rails).
  • UC 4: In permanent contact with the ground or fresh water. Direct soil or freshwater contact (eg. fence posts, sleepers, retaining walls).
  • UC 5: Permanently exposed to wetting by saltwater. All components in permanent contact with seawater.

For civil engineering and landscaping, classes 3, 4 and 5 are the ones that matter day to day. One rule from our own specification work: any timber used for joists should be pressure treated to a higher specification (use class 4) as they are in closer contact with the ground, face wetter conditions and are far harder to replace than the boards above them.

Route One: Natural Durability

The simplest way to meet a demanding use class is a species whose natural durability already covers it. A class 1 or 2 hardwood needs no treatment for use class 3 or 4 service, which is why species such as Ekki have stood in marine structures for 50 years and more. Even durable species have limits, though: we love untreated Oak for many outdoor applications, but it is not always best suited for long-term ground contact.

Why use reclaimed timber for civil or marine projects

Route Two: Preservative Impregnation

Where budget points to a softwood, impregnation closes the gap. Impregnated softwood means the timber has been treated with a chemical preservative to increase its durability. Unlike surface finishes, this treatment is pumped deep into the fibres of the timber, going beyond the surface of the wood to penetrate the entire board. Treatment is matched to a target use class:

  • UC3 impregnated softwood suits above-ground outdoor work: fencing panels, external cladding, decking and footbridges. It can handle rain and high humidity, but not standing water.
  • UC4 impregnated softwood is the ground-contact workhorse: retaining walls, ground-level sleepers, decking beams and joists, raised beds, posts and fencing stakes. Treated to UC4, impregnated Pine could provide up to 30 years of service life outdoors.
  • UC5 impregnated softwood covers permanent water contact: piers, marine decking, lock gates, fenders and groynes, with resistance to marine borers.

It is worth saying upfront that UC4 treated Pine is not trying to be a tropical hardwood. Species such as Ekki and Opepe are naturally dense and incredibly durable, needing no treatment for heavy-duty or long-term applications, but that performance comes at a cost. If you do not need a timber which could last 80 years underwater, UC4 treated softwood can be a smart, sustainable and economical choice.

Route Three: Thermal Modification

Thermal modification uses no chemicals, just heat. The timber is first kiln dried to reduce its moisture content, then placed in a controlled high-temperature, low-oxygen environment where the heat changes the wood’s cellular structure. The absence of oxygen prevents the timber from combusting while promoting the desired changes in its physical and chemical composition. Controlled cooling then stabilises the timber so it holds onto its new properties, before inspection and grading.

Several distinct processes exist across Europe, differing mainly in how the heat is applied: standard thermal modification heats timber above 180°C with oxygen removed; hydrothermal treatment works at 160 to 190°C under high pressure with dry curing at 170 to 190°C; the German OHT process uses an oil bath at 180 to 220°C; and French Retification places low-moisture wood in a high-nitrogen atmosphere with under 2% oxygen.

The result, sold as ThermoWood, has better resistance to decay, much better stability and a longer life than the untreated timber, with the natural appearance intact. Species suited to the process include Frake, Ash, Redwood, Spruce and Radiata, and modified timbers such as Abodo and OrganoWood extend the same principle.

A Note on ISPM15 Shipping Timber

One standard sits outside the durability system: ISPM15, the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures. It requires that all timber packaging materials (including timber pallets and crates) be treated, usually with heat, to remove pests and disease pathogens before international shipping, and compliant timber is stamped with a clear mark. The point is biosecurity, keeping threats such as the Asian longhorn beetle out of ecosystems they could devastate.

Keeping Timber in Service

Inspect annually, ideally in late summer before the harder weather, looking for splits, movement around fixings and early rot. Oiled and stained timber generally wants re-coating every 12 to 18 months, with lower-wear installations stretching toward the longer end. And fix with corrosion-resistant metals, hot-dip galvanised or stainless steel depending on species and exposure, because a rusted fixing opens up a durable board long before the timber itself would fail.
