Let's go!

You will have heard of Cedar, you have probably heard of Beech – and you have most definitely heard of Oak. But what about Cloeziana?

The world of timber species is a vast and varied one, yet most of us stick to the same well-known varieties for every project. If you are ready to shake things up and dip your toe into something new, we have got you covered. Our EcoChoice timber experts have compiled a list of some of the lesser-known timber types we think you should try next.

Cloeziana

Cloeziana is a variety of Eucalyptus which is native to Australia (it is particularly fond of flourishing in Queensland). The timber is incredibly durable, see-sawing between durability classes 1 and 2, making it more resistant to rot than some of the popular hardy timbers we mentioned earlier. That includes Oak (a firm member of durability class 2).

Cloeziana timber has a fantastic resistance to rot and marine borers, making it one of our favourite choices for marine applications. From piers and bridges to fenders and groynes, this is a lesser-known timber which packs a durable punch.

Jatoba

Also known as Brazilian Cherry, Jatoba is a tree found across South America with a durability class between 1 and 2. The timber tends to be predominantly yellow with undertones of a beautiful red, making this a fantastic choice for flooring, decking and cladding.

Do note that this timber can be pretty difficult to work because it is so dense and hard, so we would recommend it more for people with some previous experience working with timber.

Tali

Hailing from Africa, Tali is a light, bright timber which blends tones of yellow, brown, red and orange. It is highly resistant to wear and tear, and is another species which falls within the category of durability class 1, perfect for external applications.

This is a fantastic timber for building sturdy frameworks, making it ideal for building and bridge construction. Thanks to its beautiful colour, we can also recommend it for decking and cladding, bringing a unique aesthetic to your project.
