Larch is one of our most popular timbers at EcoChoice. Alongside species such as Oak, Ekki, and Cedar, its versatility makes it a top pick for a wide range of applications, from decking to exterior furniture. But while it is frequently used in British construction, a lot of people are unsure of one very important characteristic: is Larch a softwood or a hardwood? Let’s find out.
Is Larch a Softwood or a Hardwood?
Our timber experts can confirm that Larch is a softwood. This is true for all varieties of Larch, including British and Siberian (which is currently unavailable because of its classification as a conflict timber). As soon as you hear the word “Larch”, you can be certain you’re dealing with a softwood rather than a hardwood. Before jumping to conclusions, though, it is important to note that this is far from a weak or soft timber.
Is Larch a Durable Timber?
Larch is a durability class 3 timber, which classifies it as moderately durable. This means it will have a lifespan of 10-15 years and has a fairly good resistance to rot and infestation. We happily recommend Larch for outdoor applications, for example, cladding and fencing, knowing that it can live up to the wear and tear these timber constructions face.
It does not, however, have the durability required to withstand long-term direct ground contact. For applications where it will be close to or touching the ground, we recommend treating your Larch before installation, bringing added longevity to your project.
Tips for Working With Larch
Larch is moderately easy to work with, especially compared with tough hardwoods; Greenheart for instance. For a softwood, it is quite dense, with a high resin content that can make cutting and fixing slightly more demanding. We advise using sharp tools and opting for stainless steel fixings to prevent staining and ensure a clean finish. Pre-drilling screw holes helps avoid splitting.
Larch also takes on stains and treatments very well if you would like to alter the appearance or colour of your cladding.
With the right care, Larch will deliver strength, character, and long-lasting appeal to a wide range of internal and external projects.
