What is Iroko Timber?

Think of Iroko as the all-rounder of the timber world. Though not part of the Teak family, it is often referred to as African Teak because of its similar appearance (but lower price tag).

Iroko is a durable hardwood which hails from the west coast of Africa. With its golden to medium brown tones and subtle grain pattern, it brings warmth and character to any project.

Characteristics of Iroko Timber

Tough, solid and low-maintenance, Iroko is built to last. It is dimensionally stable, meaning that it does not shrink or warp easily when there are changes in humidity, making it a great choice for applications where accuracy is crucial.

It also offers brilliant natural durability, so you will not necessarily have to treat your boards before use. From decking to cladding, untreated Iroko timber is a great, eco-friendly choice which does not require a lot of upkeep.

We also love that Iroko weathers beautifully. Without UV protection (such as this treatment from Osmo), it will develop a silver-grey patina for a sun-washed, rustic look which is popular in both traditional and contemporary architecture.

Is Iroko Timber Easy to Work With?

As it boasts very impressive durability, you might think that Iroko would be tough to work with. Fortunately, that is not the case! You can use hand tools on Iroko with great results, and it is a favourite amongst seasoned DIY enthusiasts and construction professionals alike.

Is Iroko Expensive?

Cost is all relative to your project’s budget, and we do not like to label any of our timbers as either cheap or expensive. Having said that, as a really durable tropical hardwood with a beautiful appearance, we would say that Iroko is cost-effective. This is a Use Class 3 timber with exceptional longevity, meaning you can use it in almost any external application and it will last for decades with minimal maintenance, and the longer a timber lasts, the more worthwhile the investment is.

Iroko Timber Applications

Where can you use Iroko? Just about anywhere. The list of suitable applications is a long one and includes:

Thanks to its resistance to rot, you can also use Iroko for marine applications, such as marine decking and piers. In other words, this timber is as versatile as they come.
