If you have been a part of the EcoChoice community for a little while, you will probably know that we love Cedar. It is one of our consistent go-tos for timber cladding and a species of which we will never get enough – and it turns out that you agree with us! We are seeing a huge number of clients requesting Cedar for high-end cladding projects, so we thought we would put together a quick overview of why this is such an excellent choice.
A Blend of Durability and Workability
Canadian Western Red Cedar is naturally durable, falling under the category of a durability class 2 timber. This is ideal for cladding, bringing that natural resistance to rot which creates low-maintenance projects. If you do not want to be scaling your walls every year to apply yet another treatment, you will be very happy with this timber.
But where Canadian Western Red Cedar really stands out is that it is also workable. This is not typically the case with super durable timbers! This timber species machines beautifully, holds fixings well and takes stains or coatings consistently, making it a dream for smooth projects with a tight timeline.
British Cedar does lag a little behind in terms of durability as a class 3. For high-end cladding where budgets are not an issue, we would opt for Canadian Cedar 10 out of 10 times – no contest.
Dimensional Stability
Canadian Cedar has a naturally low shrinkage rate, giving it excellent dimensional stability. When there are inevitably changes in the humidity around your building, it will move far less than some other timber species, making installation and upkeep a lot easier. A timber cladding which shifts and swells minimally looks better for longer, which is a must for high-end architecture.
Aesthetic Appeal
As the name suggests, Western Red Cedar has a beautiful reddish hue running through the timber. It is a warm-toned species, being predominantly yellow-gold with those lively hints of red and brown, and a consistent grain which lends itself perfectly to external cladding. In terms of aesthetics, it lands somewhere between contemporary and rustic, making it a versatile choice for a wide range of design styles.
