EcoChoice - The Story So Far

Over the past few years, our team at EcoChoice has been busy supplying sustainable timber to construction projects around the UK. From garden decking to public piers, our FSC- and PEFC-certified timber has been put to good work across the country! But while we have been building up a great reputation, our business has also been evolving and changing.

Never ones to take any success for granted, we thought we would take a wander down memory lane to see how the EcoChoice of today came to be. Learn more about us, our story and our sustainable timber with the EcoChoice Story So Far.

Sustainable Beginnings

EcoChoice first started operating way back in 2005 (almost 20 years ago – time flies!). The concept was created by our Managing Director, Mike Bekin, who still sits at the sustainable helm of EcoChoice today.

Hailing from Brazil, rainforests and woodland have always been a part of Mike’s life, and it was his love for the natural environment which inspired the concept of EcoChoice. Moving from the tropical landscape of South America to the rolling hills of East England, he saw a need in the market for timber products which come from a truly sustainable system, and set out with the goal of promoting PEFC- and FSC-certified timber to the UK construction industry.

Nowadays sustainability is part and parcel of many construction projects, but this was not the case when EcoChoice began. Our clients needed guidance on how they could approach projects more sustainably, and with forest preservation (rather than deforestation) in mind.

Our Independently Certified Solution

Mike decided that the best way to bring eco-friendly timber to the construction industry was by endorsing the FSC and PEFC. As two globally recognised organisations, they make it simple for designers, architects and homeowners to understand the importance of responsibly sourced timber, and how they can help save forests through the use of this material. Our job was to bring these certified timber products to the people.

What We are Passionate About

When it comes to wood, we want the products we supply to make a genuine positive difference in the world. Illegal felling of trees is destructive to the planet, wildlife and local communities. We are passionate about making it easier for people to make the kinder, more sustainable choice of sourcing timber from woodlands and forests which are managed by people who genuinely care about their impact.

The timber we supply comes from forests where:

• A single species is never over-harvested
• Conservation and biodiversity are championed
• Methods of felling and transporting trees are used which have less of an impact on the surrounding habitats (reduced impact logging methods)
• Employees are paid a fair wage
• Work to support and protect local communities is paramount

That is just the tip of the iceberg, too! Independently certified woodlands can be life-changing for the wildlife, animals and people living around them, as well as for our planet as a whole.
