Our History
Based near Cambridge, UK, in the East of England, EcoChoice was formed in 2005 by our Brazilian Managing Director Mike Bekin (so sustainability of tropical rainforests is something that is very dear to his heart!) with the goal of promoting FSC® certified hardwood timber to the UK construction industry.
Back then, many specifiers (such as architects and engineers) as well as clients (such as central and local government) were in desperate need of guidance and information on what was the best way to engage in a sustainable way with tropical forests instead of simply turning away from the deforestation problem.
The FSC® system then, as it still is today, was the best way to ensure the long-term survival of precious forest resources, wherever they may be. From Brazil to Siberia, forest managers have a set of standards to work to and be independently audited upon.
The wood from these FSC® certified forests is harvested in a way that protects the local habitat as well as the local indigenous people, ensuring their sustainable position. After that, a chain-of-custody trail follows each sale to avoid it being mixed with timber from non-certified forests.
Here’s a short film that explains the supply chain from tropical forests, and how you too can contribute to the preservation of tropical forests. It is well worth watching!
Buying timber, as long as from certified sustainable sources, actually helps to save endangered forests.
