As one of the great native timbers of the UK and most of Europe, we adore Larch. At EcoChoice, it is one of our favourite timbers for any project which requires a bit of oomph, including external applications, and does the softwood timber category proud. Why? Let’s take a look.
Whether we have recommended Larch as an ideal timber for your project or you are doing some independent research before making a decision, find out in this guide everything you need to know about Larch.
A Quick Note on Siberian Larch
It is good to note that the most famous Larch is Siberian Larch. However, this is currently not available in the UK because of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Do not worry, though! British or European Larch is not in any way lacking, making it a perfect timber choice for your construction project.
What is Larch Timber?
Larch is a naturally long lived softwood timber. It is found in woodlands and forests across the country and is prized for its natural durability, with a hefty resistance to moisture, rot and insect attack. In other words? It is ideal for outdoor applications.
Thanks to its durability and excellent dimensional stability, it is one of the lowest maintenance softwoods on the market, alongside species such as Cedar and Douglas Fir. If you do not want to spend your summer staining garden benches or replacing rotting timber, you will be more than happy with Larch as a budget option for durable timber..
Practical features aside, Larch is also renowned for its beauty. It is fairly light in colour but with a golden-reddish undertone which brings rustic warmth to any project.
The Many Uses of Larch
Larch is a popular choice for timber cladding thanks to its natural beauty, durability and cost-effective price tag. However, this is just touching the surface of the many uses of our country’s humble Larch.
One of the reasons we love this timber species so much is that it is easy to work with, making it a great timber for a wide variety of applications. Use it to create exterior furniture, build decking which can withstand a whole lot of wear and tear, or put up a fence in your garden. Why not go the extra mile and create an outhouse using Larch as your timber of choice?
It is also perfectly suited to indoor applications, bringing warmth and light to your interior. Larch is a particularly popular choice for flooring, and can be used to build indoor furnishings.
There is little that you cannot do with a few, high-quality boards of Larch timber.
Choosing Sustainable Larch Timber
By opting for Larch sourced from responsibly managed forests, you can help keep our woodlands growing and abundant. At EcoChoice, we work with independently certified forests to source timber from woodland where:
- No species is over-felled.
- Habitats and local species are respected and protected.
- Trees which are felled are left to replenish naturally.
- Biodiversity is encouraged.
- Deforestation is a big no.
