Timber beams can last for hundreds of years if you treat them well. Go into any countryside cottage built before the 1900s and you will quite likely spot some internal timber which has been around for as long as the house! But how do people keep their timber products in such good shape? One method is through treatments, and to help you make the right choice for your timber beams, we have taken a closer look at some of the top options available.
Thermo Modification
Thermo modification (you will also see it referred to as ThermoWood on the EcoChoice site) involves heating timber under high temperatures and pressure, without any oxygen present. This changes the structure of the timber to create a more durable wood with a high resistance to rot, decay and insect infestation. It also enhances the dimensional stability of the timber, meaning it is less likely to warp, swell or shrink over time.
Thermo modification uses no toxic chemicals and is a long-lasting treatment, making it a great option for eco-friendly, fuss-free maintenance. If you want your beams to last for years without needing any upkeep, this is the option for you.
Borate Treatments
Borates are natural salts which can be used as a very effective timber treatment, keeping your beams safe from insects and pests. The salts sink deeply into the timber for long-term protection, keeping termites at bay for decades to come. borate treatments do not change the structural integrity or the look of your beams, and – of course – because they are completely natural and non-toxic.
Typically, you will need to apply borate salts to beams shortly after construction, but you can also add them throughout the life of the timber to keep future damage at bay.
Natural Oils
Looking for an old-school, natural timber preservative? Oils are the answer.
Using oils to protect wood is a method which dates back centuries, with linseed, tung and teak oils all ideal for nourishing your timber beams. They replace the natural oils lost over time, and create a moisture-resistant barrier to reduce the chance of rot, warping and swelling. Oils can enhance the natural colour of your timber, bringing out the vibrancy of the wood so that it always looks its best.
Limewash Treatments
Limewash is another traditional treatment which is great for preserving timber beams. It is a breathable coating which keeps pests at bay while letting moisture escape, reducing the chance of rot. Limewash also provides a natural fire retardant layer, which is an added benefit for exposed beams used inside. The matte finish tends to lean towards the rustic aesthetic, and you will need to re-apply it every 5-7 years to keep your timber properly preserved.
