Whether you are taking on a cladding project for a client or renovating your old outhouse, your construction will have a carbon footprint. A simple way to boost your project’s sustainability? Choose sustainable timber cladding. Learn in this guide what exactly that means and how the EcoChoice team can help you find a sustainable timber cladding species.
What Makes Timber Sustainable?
Timber is the perfect blend of environmental consciousness and aesthetic perks. As a natural, renewable material, timber stands out from other cladding options – for instance fibre cement, metal and plastic, all of which are non-renewable.
One of timber’s most valuable environmental contributions is its ability to sequester carbon. As trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it within their fibres. When used in cladding projects, this carbon remains locked away for the lifetime of the building, helping to offset emissions elsewhere.
For every dry tonne of timber produced, 1.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide are absorbed from the atmosphere – pretty impressive!
Balance Beauty and Sustainability
As if the sustainable perks of timber are not enough, it is also a beautiful choice for cladding.
Timber cladding brings warmth, texture and character to a building, softening its visual presence and helping it sit comfortably within natural or rural settings. This strong connection to nature also supports biophilic design principles, which are known to enhance well-being in built environments.
You can also switch up the timber species you choose to suit your style. Canadian Western Red Cedar or thermally modified Radiata pine, for instance, looks a little more contemporary and sleek, while Oak or Larch is perfect for more rustic cladding.
With timber, you do not have to choose between sustainability and style – you get both, naturally.
Finding a Sustainable Timber Choice
Choosing sustainable timber for cladding in the UK is a no-brainer. The real question is, how do you know the difference between sustainable and unsustainable timber? Luckily, this does not have to be tricky.
The best way to make a greener choice for your cladding project is to look for timber which is certified as responsibly sourced. A stamp of approval from an organisation such as the FSC or PEFC means that your timber is from forests which are managed to:
- Ensure that felled tree species are replenished
- Prioritise biodiversity
- Respect local environments and habitats
- Respect indigenous communities
It is also important that you steer clear of endangered timber species or conflict timbers. These include Siberian Larch (conflict timber) and Mahogany (endangered).
At EcoChoice, all the timber we supply for UK cladding projects is independently certified. Browse our range of suitable timber species to find an eco-friendly material for your next construction project.
