Let's go!

Timber sleepers are a staple in the landscaping industry. From practical raised beds to contemporary garden steps, they can be used throughout outdoor spaces to add function, charm and sustainability. They are also pretty easy to work with, making them a great option for DIY landscaping projects.

But before you jump headfirst into sleeper construction, it is smart to get to grips with how best to use them. To help, our timber experts at EcoChoice have put together our golden rules for working with sleepers. Let’s dive in!

Choose High-Quality Timber

The longevity of your landscaping project will heavily depend on the species you choose for your timber sleepers. Look for a durable, strong and dimensionally stable timber which is suitable for external use.

We recommend Oak for hardy sleepers that you can rely on. It is low-maintenance and super strong but is still fairly easy to work with, making it our top choice for landscaping. You do not need to treat Oak for external use, for fuss-free installation which is built to last.

But be aware of the Oak you are buying … There are many “cousin” species on the market these days from countries such as Turkey and Romania which are nowhere near as durable as the Classic French or English Oak available at EcoChoice.

Always Prepare the Ground First

Timber sleepers rely on good groundwork. If you do not prepare your garden surface before laying your sleepers, you can expect drainage problems and uneven sleepers, and you might even see your timber shift or come loose from its fittings over time.

Give your project solid foundations with proper groundwork. Clear your area of any debris and vegetation before levelling the ground, ensuring that the soil is compact and firm for an even base. You might also want to add a membrane between your sleepers and the ground to prevent weed growth and to enhance the longevity of your sleeper project.

To Treat or Not to Treat?

A durable timber species, such as Oak, does not have to be treated to last for decades. But do be aware that untreated wood will weather to a silvery-grey. Treated timber utilises a cheaper less durable species and gives it a boost against external threats, helping your sleepers last longer.

Maintain Good Drainage

In certain applications, for example retaining walls and garden steps, it is crucial you create good drainage for the longevity of your sleepers. Timber can handle water, but if it is becoming trapped behind the wood and pooling, you do increase the chance of your sleepers becoming damaged over time.

You may need to add pipes behind retaining walls, for example, to direct water away from the sleepers, or add a material which drains well at any points where the timber is in contact with the ground.
