Let's go!

Ready to upgrade your shed for the winter? Whether it is the perfect place to organise your garden supplies and craft woodworking items for your landscaping projects, or you have turned it into an at-home office, you can keep using it throughout the colder months with proper insulation. Get started with the tips in this guide.

Different Methods of Insulating Your Shed

When warming up your outdoor shed, there are a number of different insulation methods you can use. These include:

  • Installing timber cladding to the exterior of your shed
  • Adding fibreglass to your interior walls
  • Laying insulation board to retain heat through your flooring

Combined, these three techniques can create a toasty shed which will stay warmer even as temperatures drop, and we will take a closer look at each throughout the article.

Installing Timber Cladding

Let’s start with timber cladding. Well-known for its thermal insulation properties, adding timber boards to the exterior of your shed is an excellent way to help retain warmth without ruining the appearance of your building. In fact timber cladding often enhances exterior walls, bringing a natural aesthetic which blends beautifully with the rest of your garden.

If you have some DIY and woodworking know-how, you can install timber cladding yourself. Make it simple with these steps:

  1. Prepare the shed’s exterior by cleaning and repairing any damage
  2. Install a breathable membrane for moisture control
  3. Attach battens vertically, spaced evenly across the shed
  4. Cut the cladding boards to the required lengths
  5. Start at the bottom and fix the first board to the battens, ensuring everything is level
  6. Install the rest of your boards based on your desired profile.
  7. Use stainless steel nails or screws to secure each board to the battens

You can seriously upgrade both aesthetics and performance by using a high-end, naturally durable timber cladding species such as Canadian Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir or European Larch.

Adding Fibreglass to Your Walls

If you are looking to add insulation to the interior of your shed, fibreglass wool is a great option. This will fit in the wall cavity of your building, so be prepared either to remove the upper layer of your existing walls or reduce the interior space by creating a new wall.

To add fibreglass to your shed, follow these steps:

  1. Measure the wall cavities between the studs
  2. Cut the fibreglass wool batts to fit the wall spaces
  3. Wear protective gear (gloves, mask, goggles)
  4. Insert the fibreglass wool between the studs, ensuring a snug fit
  5. Staple or secure plastic sheeting over the insulation
  6. Replace or install interior wall coverings (e.g., plywood or drywall)
  7. Seal any gaps around windows, doors and outlets

Laying Insulation Boards

Insulation boards are a great way to prevent cold floors from ruining your experience in the shed. A lot of cold can seep from the ground up, making insulation boards a great way to help maintain a comfortable temperature in your building.

These boards are usually made of insulating foam and are pretty thin (but pack a punch in terms of insulation!). They can be laid beneath existing floorboards or added above your current flooring, with new timber floorboards placed over the top. To lay yours, simply:

  1. Measure your shed floor dimensions
  2. Cut your insulation boards to fit between floor joists
  3. Lift the existing floorboards and lay the insulation snugly between joists (if applicable) or place your boards directly onto the floor
  4. Seal gaps with expanding foam or adhesive tape
  5. Re-install or lay new floorboards over the insulation
  6. Secure the floorboards with nails or screws
