Let's go!

When looking for timber species which are suitable for outdoor use, you would be forgiven for quickly jumping to heavy-duty hardwoods. These are notable for shrugging off rain, rot and weight without breaking a sweat, making them perfect for the job. But what if a tropical hardwood is not in your budget?

This is where impregnated Pine steps in. Learn what it is, how it compares to tough hardwoods, and when it is suitable for outdoor use.

UC4 Treated Pine

UC4 (Use Class 4) is a level of timber treatment designed for timber which will be:

  • In direct ground contact.
  • Exposed to wet conditions.

In other words? It is treated for outdoor applications, such as decking and exterior furniture.

The difference between UC4 impregnated Pine and less durable treatments is that this is not just about surface preservation. ‘Impregnated’ means that the treatment has been inserted deep into the timber, ensuring that if the outer layer becomes a little worn, your Pine is still super durable and resistant to rot, fungi and insect attacks.

When impregnated Pine is treated to UC4, it could provide up to 30 years of service life, even in outdoor conditions, such as when used for fence posts or cladding.

UC4 Pine Vs. Tropical Hardwoods

It is worth saying upfront that UC4 treated pine is not trying to be a tropical hardwood.

Tropical hardwoods, for example Ekki and Opepe, are naturally very dense and incredibly durable. They do not need any added preservatives or chemical treatment to stand up to the elements, making them perfect for heavy-duty or long-term applications, such as lock gates, marine piling,or high-traffic timber decking. When you need non-negotiable durability and very little maintenance, these are your go to timbers.

But that kind of performance (and longevity) comes at a cost. Many hardwood timber species, such as Ekki, Opepe, and Balau are more expensive than Pine, harder to work with and can be overkill for lighter outdoor jobs. If you do not need a timber which could last 80 years underwater, UC4 treated softwood can be a smart, sustainable and economical choice.

When Should You Choose UC4 Impregnated Pine?

UC4 impregnated Pine is treated specifically for outdoor use, making it a great choice for common applications, e.g. garden decking and retaining walls. It is fantastic if you are:

  • Working to a tighter budget but still want reliable outdoor performance
  • After easier handling with a lighter timber which is easy to work with

For structural applications or marine constructions, we would probably recommend upgrading to a tougher tropical hardwood. For any scenario when the timber will be in frequent or constant contact with water (such as fenders and groynes) opt for a Use Class 1 timber for unbeatable durability.
