Let's go!

If you are new around here, let us fill you in quickly: we love timber. Timber decking, timber fencing – if it is timber, we are ready to get excited! One of our biggest passions is beautifully designed, sustainable timber cladding, bringing longevity and style to buildings. With that in mind, we wanted to share some of our all-time favourite architectural cladding projects with our fellow timber enthusiasts. From Oslo to Perth, let’s celebrate cladding creativity!

Monocoque Cabin, Shropshire, UK

Architect Peter Markos is known for designing sustainable, rural getaways, so it is no surprise that timber cladding features heavily in his buildings. The Monocoque Cabin in Shropshire is no different. This off-grid, uniquely shaped cabin resembles a cocoon and is heavily inspired by nature.

On the exterior of the cabin, Markos has created a skin-like layer of Cedar. Though not the traditional cladding structure, we love this unique take on using timber to form the outer walls, and the Cedar shingles have us feeling very inspired.

Haus 2+, Berlin, Germany

Haus 2+ is an extraordinary, all-timber building which makes us swoon every time we see it. The architects prioritised a low carbon footprint when designing the space, making a timber frame and timber cladding the obvious choice. What we really love about this building is the use of colour, with bright red timber proving that this material can be versatile and fun, and is anything but boring.

It certainly stands out on the street, making it well worth a visit if you are ever in Berlin.

Old Bearhurst Extension, East Sussex, UK

The Old Bearhurst Extension is an EcoChoice project of which we are particularly proud. Working with the amazing Duggan Morris architects, we provided Thermomodified Frake for this barn renovation project. Contemporary yet blending perfectly with the surrounding natural landscape, it is no surprise that this amazing home was nominated for the RIBA Manser Medal, highlighting it as one of the best new houses in the UK.

Holmenkollen Ski Museum, Oslo, Norway

Holmenollen Ski Museum has been given a rather lovely upgrade, with timber cladding now a major feature of its design. Again, this is not traditional cladding but instead uses timber battens to decorate and protect the new extension, showing how timber can be both decorative and functional.

The timber used is Glulam, a wonderful laminated wood. Using off-cuts of many different timbers, it is a sustainable choice which provides both durability and beauty.

Grotto Studio and Shadow House, Perth, Australia

Grotto Studio used charred Jarrah timber on an extension to an existing 1900s cottage, preserving the original charm while introducing an aspect of contemporary architecture. We are big fans of charred timber as a sustainable, durable treatment option. It is exquisite in terms of both aesthetics and strength, and an age-old technique with Japanese heritage.

The inspiration for the design actually came from the existing shadows, which informed the direction of the building and also gave it its name, Shadow House. Beautiful!
