Let's go!

From coastal piers to woodland walkways, timber is a staple in outdoor construction. As one of our most versatile and sustainable building materials, it is a firm favourite amongst many of the UK’s construction professionals, architects, and landscapers – but that is not to say that you cannot go wrong with timber! In particular, it is crucial that when selecting timber for exposed environments, you take durability into account.

For a lot of external applications, we recommend durability class 1 timber. Learn more in this guide about what this is, how the rating is determined, and how it can simplify your search for the right outdoor timber.

What is a Durability Class?

Timber durability classes are based on European-wide standards that assess just how well different timber species can stand up to external wear and tear. They take into account the timber’s resistance to rot, for instance, as well as how susceptible it is to insect attack. If you are on the hunt for a solid timber species you can use outside, we highly recommend looking at durability classes.

Understanding Durability Class 1

The durability classes range from 1 to 5, with 5 being the least durable (suitable for indoor use in non-humid environments only). Class 1 represents the highest natural resistance to decay, with these timbers boasting a superior natural resilience to external threats.

While durability classes 2 and 3 are also suitable for outdoor use, only class 1 timbers are able to be in constant contact with water without the need for maintenance. These species can even be entirely submerged in water, making them a go-to for marine applications or for being used partially in the ground (think half-buried landscaping sleepers).

The main takeaways? Durability class 1 timbers are not afraid of moisture or insects, and will last for over 25 years without a single touch-up – and far longer with a little TLC.
