Let's go!

Whether you run your own business from home or work as a remote employee, a garden office provides a dedicated workspace in the comfort of your home. It gives you the privacy to conduct work calls, keeps distractions to a minimum and improves work-life balance – what’s not to love?

If you are a DIY enthusiast, you may even be able to build your own garden office. Here are our top tips to help you get your new workspace up and running in no time.

Do You Need Planning Permission?

In the UK, you do not necessarily need planning permission to build an office in your garden. You will need to stick to certain regulations to avoid having to apply, including:

  • Not building higher than 2.5 metres from the ground
  • Not exceeding a space of more than 30 square metres
  • Not building closer to a road than your original home
  • Not using the office as living accommodation
  • Not taking up more than 50% of your garden

For more advice on whether your garden office will need planning permission, we recommend getting in touch with your local council. They will be able to advise you of any rules which are specific to your neighbourhood or property.

Design Your Garden Office

Before starting any building work, make sure you have a clear vision for your garden office. This does not need to include your decor, but should take into account:

  • The size and shape of your garden office
  • How many rooms you will need
  • Your interior layout
  • Window and door designs
  • Window and door positions
  • Soundproofing and insulation considerations
  • Electricity and water supplies

You can use design software to help you with this, or simply sketch out your plans. Remember to add measurements for all the design details.

Choose Your Materials

The main materials for your garden office will be used to lay the foundations and create the frame. You can use cement or metal for your office frame, though for the most sustainable project, we recommend timber. This is an incredibly durable, cost-effective material which also acts as a carbon store, keeping harmful CO₂ from entering our atmosphere.

Choose a durable timber species and you wont need to treat the wood, making it a low-maintenance choice with which is easy to work. Some of our top picks for timber frames include:

Prepare Your Space

You will need sturdy foundations to create your garden office. Before building a frame, begin by levelling your surface and digging down around 10cm into the soil. Fill this area with aggregate, which will help with drainage below your structure and prevent flooding. You can then add concrete blocks or pads and build a timber subframe, using a strong and durable species to provide sturdy foundations for the office.

Start Building With Quality Timber

Finding a timber which is durable, strong and works with your requirements will play a huge part in the overall success of your project. We recommend reading about our responsibly sourced timber species to learn more about the right choices.
