Wondering which timbers have been the most popular this year? We’re rounding up some of our bestsellers – the species that have caught the eye of construction teams, architects, and homeowners around the UK – to bring you the top timbers of 2025, so far. Sustainably sourced and FSC or PEFC-certified, each of these also comes from responsibly managed woodlands when you order through EcoChoice, ensuring you’re both on-trend and eco-friendly.
Get inspired for your next project with 2025’s most in-demand hardwoods and softwoods.
Ekki Timber
Ekki is a long-standing firm favourite amongst EcoChoice customers (and the EcoChoice team, for that matter!). Originating from West Africa, it’s incredibly dense and durable, making it particularly popular for outdoor applications that’ll see a lot of wear and tear. Think projects like marine construction, bridges, and heavy decking. Although it can be tough to work with due to its density, Ekki’s long lifespan makes it an investment piece for serious construction and outdoor builds.
Cedar Timber
Cedar is a softwood, but don’t let that label fool you; it’s still one of the most reliable performers for outdoor use. Naturally resistant to decay, insects, and moisture, it’s a favourite for applications like cladding and fencing.
At EcoChoice, we stock Canadian and British Cedar, both of which are bestsellers but for different reasons. Canadian Western Red Cedar brings incredible durability and strength to projects, and is highly valued for its distinctive reddish-brown tones. While slightly less durable, British Cedar is a popular choice for domestic projects that don’t require such a hardy timber, and the lower price tag is a hit amongst project managers.
Thermowood
For projects where budget plays a major role, Thermo Woods are often the go-to, striking the perfect balance between durability and cost-effectiveness. They’re the most affordable option on the list, making them a best seller for a wide range of projects, from landscaping to structural joists and beams. At EcoChoice, our thermowoods are heat treated in a way that makes them more stable and durable than untreated Pine or Spruce. They’re also lighter, making it easier to carry and fix your cladding and decking.
Oak
Will Oak ever go out of style? We don’t think so. A timeless timber species that’s much-loved in British construction, it’s used for everything from structural beams to furniture and flooring. We’ve also seen a lot of love for Oak sleepers, which are often used in landscaping and make great retaining walls. From the rustic charm of weathered Oak to its classic reputation as a reliable beam, it’s not hard to see why it’s on the list.
Opepe Timber
Another heavyweight West African hardwood, Opepe remains in high demand for outdoor and marine projects. It’s incredibly durable and naturally resistant to rot, while providing more workability than some similar species such as Ekki and Greenheart, which makes it easier to machine. The golden-orange tones add to the appeal of this tropical hardwood, lending both resilience and character to domestic and commercial projects.
