4 signs that say it’s time for timber cladding replacement

When installed and maintained correctly, timber is a very durable and long-lasting material. Even for external uses, it can last for upwards of twenty years without a hitch! But there will always come a time when some or all of the wood needs to be replaced. Here are the top four signs to look for to know yours is in need of a change.

1. Cracks and Damage to the Timber

If your timber is badly cracked, split, splintering or damaged in some other way, it is time to replace it. Luckily with cladding, it is possible to replace only the damaged board when the whole structure is still in good condition. Pinpoint which boards are beyond repair and replace them with new timber planks, cut to size and made from the same timber species and profile. Just remember that they may look a little different to your other boards as a result of natural weathering, but applying a stain to all the cladding can solve this issue.

2. Warped Wood

Warping in wood is natural as the moisture content shifts. However, proper installation of wood with a moisture content of around 16% should see few issues with shrinking and swelling. Over time, though, it can be difficult to prevent permanent warping, especially if the area in which you live is particularly wet or humid which makes maintenance tricky. If you see a significant change in the size or shape of any particular cladding board which puts the structural integrity or aesthetic of your structure at risk, it is time for a change.

3. Signs of Timber Rot

Dry rot is fairly common in timber, especially if it is old or untreated. This is caused by fungal infestation and once it is in your wood, your timber needs to be replaced quickly to prevent it from spreading. Wet rot is slightly different to dry rot as it remains localised, but the timber affected should still be replaced. Signs of rot include a damp, musty smell, fine brown dust on your wood and visible signs of timber decay such as darkened and damaged wood.

4. There is an Insect Infestation

If you spot new holes in your timber and wood dust surrounding the area of the holes, it could be a sign that insects are attacking your wood. You may also see eggs in the crevices of the timber, which is a clear sign you have an insect problem. If you see these things, it is time to replace all affected cladding immediately and call in an expert to examine the rest of your boards. The sooner you get rid of infested timber, the more of your cladding you can save!

Maintenance of Timber is Essential to Avoiding Replacement

As a natural material that breaks down over time, you will inevitably have to replace your timber cladding at some point. However, you can extend its lifespan by choosing a quality, durable species that has been approved for external use, having it installed correctly and carrying out regular maintenance. You can prolong its life service even more by applying and maintaining a coat of protective stain.
